A friend of mine once explained to me that serving on a jury is a more important civic duty than voting.

There's much to be said for that. (Although I've heard a good argument for semi-pro juries.) I actually like jury duty, freak that I am, but I understand the burden it can be for the self-employed.

the guy was subpoenaed before the judge, appeared there in person, looked meek and apologized profusely.
he was let go without a fine or any other sanction, and was relieved from jury duty.

I fail to see how he can have any legitimate complaints about our "justice" system, as he puts it, when he refuses to participate when invited.
