For those in or near New York city, we want to remind you of our exciting new fall series beginning Wednesday night with Dr. Amnon Shapira. Dr Shapira is an extraordinarily dynamic and engaging teacher who is visiting from Israel for just this semester - don't miss him! Info is as follows:

6 Wednesdays, Nov 9, 16,30, Dec 7, 14, 21, 7:30 PM

Biblical Readings: Between Tradition and Modernity
with Dr. Amnon Shapira, Senior Lecturer, Department of Bible, Bar Ilan University.

This course will consist of six lectures dealing with different aspects of Biblical studies, all of which are united by the premise that traditional Biblical language may be understood in an updated fashion that reveals new aspects of modern thought.

Lecture one (“What is a Feminist reading of the Hebrew Bible?”) will show how modern feminist attitudes are inspired by Biblical texts. Lecture two brings a new, positive meaning to the term “anarchism”, which we will define for our purposes as “less centralized government and more communal authority and involvement.” Lectures three (“Dilemmas: Opposing values in the Bible and Rabbinic Literature: A mishap or Divinely intended?”) and four (“Dilemmas in Genesis: From survival of the species to incest”) show how the study of dilemmas, which was developed by Piaget and Kohlberg, is deeply rooted in ancient Jewish culture. The fifth lecture deals with The Biblical tendency to limits and mitigate war, and the sixth lecture proves that not only are democratic values not foreign to Judaism, but that Judaism is actually their source.

Classes will take place at the JCC in Manhattan, Amsterdam Ave. between 75th and 76th Streets. To register in advance please call 646-505-5708 or point your browser to the JCC Registration Page,
