Dec. 10th, 2014 10:18 pmIt turns out that regular Charliecards expire. The only reason I know is because I heard a PA announcement to that effect in the subway: "Your Charliecard may be expiring. Check it at a fare machine."
The link above does say that "CharlieCard expiration dates can be found by tapping the card at a Fare Vending Machine and using the Card/Ticket Information button." So I went to a fare machine and did that.
The touchscreen menu was replaced with a bluish screen and a dialog box informing me that "FRONTEND.EXE has performed an illegal operation and will be closed by Windows." Nothing else happened. I then crashed another fare machine in the same manner and decided to leave the third alone (there were only three at that entrance). But on my way home I tried it with a third machine at another entrance with the same result.
Now wasn't that a Windows 95 message?
