It turns out that regular Charliecards expire. The only reason I know is because I heard a PA announcement to that effect in the subway: "Your Charliecard may be expiring. Check it at a fare machine."

The link above does say that "CharlieCard expiration dates can be found by tapping the card at a Fare Vending Machine and using the Card/Ticket Information button." So I went to a fare machine and did that.

The touchscreen menu was replaced with a bluish screen and a dialog box informing me that "FRONTEND.EXE has performed an illegal operation and will be closed by Windows." Nothing else happened. I then crashed another fare machine in the same manner and decided to leave the third alone (there were only three at that entrance). But on my way home I tried it with a third machine at another entrance with the same result.

Now wasn't that a Windows 95 message?

I don't believe it was exclusive to Win95, but it doesn't bode well anyway. If the reader terminals are running Windows (and buggy enough to return that error consistently), I'm glad that the cards expire. I'd hate to think of the implications were the card something I was expecting to hold on to (especially if it were a card tied to other things, like a bank account for auto-withdrawals).
