Moving Day
Sep. 1st, 2009 10:23 amLast week there was a highway news sign on Commonwealth Avenue:
SAT-SUN
BU MOVING DAY
EXPECT DELAYS
It happened. There's enough discarded furniture on the sidewalks of Brighton and Allston to furnish a hotel. A rather trashy hotel, of course.
I have read in "Adapting to Affluence" that the Jews of New York's East Side have started this minhag in the early 20th century, discarding old furniture on erev Pesakh. The city had to mobilize extra garbage men that week.
