Agri Update
Mar. 3rd, 2009 05:06 pm(Neb.)-Leading Agriprocessors Bid Falls Through
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) - A company that made the opening bid for an embattled northeast Iowa slaughterhouse failed to complete due diligence on the slaughterhouse and is now considered just another bidder.
Agriprocessors Inc. bankruptcy trustee Joseph Sarachek says the bid of $40 million from Israeli firm Soglowek Nahariya Ltd. fell through because of the large number of leases, and vendor and purchase agreements that had to be evaluated to determine Agriprocessors' worth.
Sarachek says if another leading bidder isn't found, Agriprocessors will be sold in a straight auction on March 23. Sarachek says four or five companies are still considered serious bidders for the plant.
Agriprocessors also ran a plant in Gordon, Neb., that closed because of the company's financial problems.
Some arrested workers back at Iowa slaughterhouse
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Twenty-five material witnesses who could be called to testify in a federal case against former managers of a kosher slaughterhouse have been released from electronic monitoring. A handful have apparently returned to work at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville.
The plant was the site of a May 12 immigration raid in which 389 people were arrested. Most were from Guatemala and Mexico. U.S. attorneys officials say all but 1 of the 25 material witnesses were convicted of felonies. Twenty-3 of them have received work authorization from the courts.
An Agriprocessors spokesman and attorney who represents some of the witnesses say a handful have returned to work at the plant. Trial in the case is scheduled for September.
