Because once you realize that your unconscious mind might be doing a lot of covert talking with the unconscious minds of others, you have to realize that you may not actually know that much about what you are doing much of the time, or why you are doing it. Your conscious reasoning about what you should do, based on what you know about your conscious motivations and acts, could be quite flawed.
This goes hand-in-hand with what Scott Adams writes about Trump: he's tapping into the sub- and unconscious.
I think Obama is mostly right here. Adam Garfinkle (not an Obama fan) also thinks similarly (can't find a link at this time). But it does not matter. We are scared, and we want action. Many more people will die
