When you introduce gentile categories you tend to get a "gentile perspective".
Actually to feel the need to know the "purpose" of the misvot, or "what you get out of them" is the gentile idea. The Hebrew idea is that we had a communicative experience with God, and have collectively decided to let Him tell us how best to worship Him.
Because a gentile cannot fathom the "terrifying witnessing" of Sinai he cannot comprehend doing misvot simply because they are misvot from God.
Rabbinic literature supports my position (actually it's that of Maimonides and all the Geonim) thoroughly.
